Awards Galore at Sithengi Festival

A host of prestigious awards heralds the second Cape Town World Cinema Festival from 14-23 November. The festival, which forms part of the 8th Edition of the Sithengi Film and Television market, showcases World Cinema, with Africa at its heart.

 



Awards will be presented in the following categories:

 

The Lionel Ngakane Award, which is presented by the National Film and Video Foundation, will be awarded to the most promising filmmaker.

Best Feature Film (R20 000)

Best Documentary (R20 000)

Best Short Film (R10 000)

Best Director

Best Actress

Best Actor

Best Writer

 

Signis Jury Prize

Amade Jury Prize (Association for the Friends of the Children)

 

Feature films in competition represent a strong line-up of independent World Cinema.  These are: At Five in the Afternoon (d/ Samira Makhmalbaf), the all-African co-production, The Forest (d/ Bassek ba Kobhio & Didier Ouenangare), Africa’s first animation, The Legend of the Sky Kindgom (d/ Roger Hawkins), Madame Brouette (d/Moussa Sene Absa), A Minute less Sunshine (d/Nabil Ayouch), Proteus (d/Jack Lewis & John Greyson), multi-award winner at Locarno 2003, Silent Waters (d/ Sabiha Sumar), AFDA student graduation film, Soldiers of the Rock (d/ Norman Maake), Fespaco Standard of Yennanga award-winner, Waiting for Happiness (d/ Abderrahmane Sissako)

 

Southern African documentaries in competition include the world première of Karoo Kitaar Blues (d/ Liza Key), the 2003 Jameson Audience Award winning Casa del Musica (d/ Jonathan de Vries), The Man who stole my Mother’s Face (d/ Cathy Henkel), Sophiatown: surviving apartheid (d/ Pascale Lamche), Zimbabwe 2002 (d/ Farai Sevenzo), Zimbabwe Countdown (d/ Michael Raeburn)

 

South African shorts in competition include two AFDA students films Black Sushi (d/ Dean Blumberg) and Skitterwit (d/ Danie Bester), the Dashing Diner (d/ Greg Watt) and the 2003 Oscar nominated Inja (d/ Steve Pasvolsky). 

 

The competition jury comprises filmmakers, producers, festival directors, and a writer and editor of world renown.  Keith Shiri and Alessandra Speciale are festival directors for Africa in the Picture – London and the Milan Film Festival, respectively.  Veteran filmmaker Katinka Heyns (d/ Paljas), Executive Producer and former Chairperson of the NFVF, Letebele Masemola Jones, and O’Magazine editor, Taweni Gondwe make up the South African contingent of the competition jury.
